Grand Hôtel Stockholm

There is something wonderful about a hotel where they value you as a customer, where the staff come up to see how you’ve been since your last visit and makes you feel at home, and Grand Hôtel in Stockholm is one of those places. If you are looking for a too-cool-for-school boutique hotel you are in the wrong place, but if you are in the mood for some old-world glamour and top-notch service with excellent food and drink – you have found your eden. I could go on and on about all the wonderful features of this hotel but to make it clear from the start, this is simply the best hotel in Stockholm, and also the best hotel in Sweden, in my humble opinion. It is a brilliant idea to book the hotel through Leading Hotels of the World, it is really worth being a member here as you always get an upgrade, sometimes late check-out and always a gift in your room and a personalised message upon arrival, and in some cases you even get free breakfast. They even have all your preferences on file, which type of pillows you like, what kind of water you’d like in your room, etc. On my to-do list when staying at Grand Hôtel there are a few things: go to the SPA, which is pure bliss, have their scrumptious afternoon tea, and lazily eat their room-service-delivered meatballs in my robe. Another good idea is taking in a cocktail in the Cadier Bar, together with their amazing burger or the bleak roe toast.

The use of the SPA is complimentary for guests, they have a small swimming pool with dimmed lights and an adjacent fireplace, and even small fires in pretty round containers over the water. The relaxation room has soft cosy blankets and headphones, fresh fruit and smoothies are available to try, and a lovely green tea to sip whilst looking in to the cosy fire. There are also jacuzzis, a steam sauna and, of course, treatments rooms with skilled therapists (I once saw Ozzy Osbourne heading in for a massage!), but my favourite feature of the SPA is the beautiful sauna and icy pools in the changing rooms. This is something very Scandinavian indeed: you first go into the dry sauna (which smells lovely from birch wood) and then, when you are hot, jump into the icy pool next to it (which has a lovely mosaic wall) and then back in to the sauna again – you repeat this a few times to get the circulation going. There is also a hair mask to use in the sauna which leaves you hair shiny and scented, and a body lotion and other products to use as you get ready to mosey back up to your room. Staying in the newest part of the hotel (the ‘Burmanska Palatset’), it is very easy to go down to the SPA level in the elevator, but once we stayed in the older part where you have to slink past the corner of the lobby and through a corridor to get to the SPA. This is really not a bother, but we did manage to embarrass ourselves slightly as we came trotting down in our robes and met the Danish Prince and Princess as they were heading to the recent Royal Wedding! They were very nice and said hello as we turned crimson :) We once met John Cleese in the same corridor – this time wearing proper attire, thankfully.

I am going to Stockholm in a few days to stay here as we are having our Stag and Hen party – Part 1 here! My fiancé and I have many friends in common, both boys and girls, and feel like it is rather sexist and stupid to divide it up between the sexes so we are all partying together instead – there will be one party in Stockholm and one in London and we are so excited about it! I have no idea what our friends have planned for us, but it is already so lovely that they have taken the time to organise it, so whatever it is I already love it. <3

Happy Birthday To Me!

Here are the pictures from my birthday, which was really wonderful! My boyfriend woke me up (I was pretend-sleeping of course, and had in fact already done my make-up while he was out buying flowers) with cupcakes from the divine Hummingbird Bakery with candles that spelled out Happy Birthday in them – so sweet! In the living room, he had made the table look so lovely covered with presents, flowers and balloons, and I got so happy. My presents were great and I was especially happy that my fiancé had found the Ladurée Wedding Cake topper for our wedding and the Boudoir Jouy perfume from Vivienne Westwood to wear on the day.

The day was perfect, we had a cosy morning in our flat and then went to a secret location for lunch, it turned out to be L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon! I’ve wanted to go there for quite some time and it did not disappoint, in fact, it was marvellous! When we got there the place was packed but when we left it was almost empty… all that good food, wine and precious company meant we had been there for ages. Walking through Soho we decided to stop off at a pub and it wasn’t long before our wine-infused minds turned to booking a karaoke room at Lucky Voice. Two-and-a-half hours later we left the karaoke place in a very merry state indeed and we went on for a light supper at Inamo in St. James. This was the perfect restaurant for a couple of geeks like ourselves as you order everything from a computer which projects down onto the table, so a very fun, interactive experience! The cocktails were tasty and so was the food, light asian fare seemed the best choice after all that karaoke.

We then went on for a cocktail at Sofitel St.James and some of our dearest friends had come there and surprised me! It was so wonderful, I rarely get surprised as I am such a control-freak and always plan everything myself, but this day was completely out of my hands and it was amazing. My friends gave me pretty flowers and Ladurée macaroons, which was the perfect accompaniment for the Chanel no.5 cocktail. After the bar we went on to a nightclub which was rather bad, but at least we were in the company of good friends, and after such a great day I didn’t really care, I was so happy! In fact, it was a good excuse to go home and look adoringly at my gifts…

The Year I Was 26 – Part Two

Here is the second part of my little summary of last year…

In the summer we went out at sea in my stepdad's boat several times, always with Nosey the dog sleeping on my lap on the way, to find a little island to sunbathe on.

I was riding bicycles and going swimming with my fiancé, and taking photos for our save-the-date cards.

Driving in the countryside is fun (sorry nature) and essential as there are no shops within 10 kilometers of my old house.

We went to my friend's house for a really fun Midsummer party, and she has the cutest dog!

We went to look at venues in London for our wedding, and managed to squeeze in some karaoke with our lovely friends.

On my boyfriend's birthday, we went to a castle for dinner and I gave him this gorgeous Lanvin tiepin and a YSL cravat needle.

There were many reasons to drink champagne last year!

We went on a holiday in the Cotswolds and felt quintessenitally English whilst rambling in Hunter boots... admittedly we mostly played Scrabble in grand buildings :)

By September we were living in London!

We got to know our new neighbourhood, and loved it!

It was fun to be able to have our friends over for cookies and to be able to meet up with our favorite people more often.

Having my own kitchen, where I can do all the baking and cooking that I like, has been great.

We went to Kew Gardens with my gardener friend and learned loads about amazing plants and blooms.

The Autumn flew past and all of a sudden we were back in Sweden, after a splendid Christmas Afternoon Tea at the Ritz, reading the Christmas stories from my childhood.

Christmas was amazing, spending time with my family, making a short film with my brother and my fiancé, stargazing and having my maid of honour come to visit. I had time to meet up with friends and run around outside with the dog and it was just perfect, cooking and baking a lot and playing games for hours.
